We arrived in Brunswick on June 26th and moved into an adorable Airbnb in the Historic District in Brunswick. We loved that it was one mile from where Meraviglia was docked and the area was lovely. Huge Oak trees lined the street and it was filled with beautiful historic homes. It was an easy walk downtown for a meal or music. We had originally booked it for two weeks with a goal of moving aboard Meraviglia at the end of that time. Then rot happened. And our launch date got pushed back. And progress overall was slow. So we are now here until July 21st thanks to our kind hosts 😊
Our Airbnb is a vacation rental so it is stocked with the basics but it is not like being in your own home and kitchen. It is a perfect in between transitioning from land life to boat life. In Seguin, we had fully renovated our kitchen as we loved cooking and making gourmet meals for family and friends. Bob is an amazing homemade pasta maker, baker, and overall is great in the kitchen. I love meal planning and finding fun recipes to try. We make a great team in the kitchen and we love eating good food. We know that boat life is going to be an adjustment for us in this department. We had every kitchen gadget known to man, a commercial Kitchen aid (that Bob could not part with; sorry Caleb-currently in storage), a baking station, double ovens, etc.… We are now moving aboard a boat with a Dickinson Marine, Mediterranean 3 Burner Marine Propane Galley Range and a Magma Products Cabo, Adventurer Marine Series Gas Grill. Using propane to do all our cooking will definitely require thought and planning. Our galley (boat kitchen) is small with even less storage. We kept one Sterilite container with spices and one with kitchen utensils/gadgets. It is going to be a challenge but this in between life is a great transition. We have had to be a bit creative in both meal planning and prep with our Airbnb kitchen. We have the top of the fridge functioning as our pantry which has made me be really selective and truly only buying what we need at the store. We have already been thinking about how we will need to store our dry goods on board Meraviglia-no cardboard and sealing things well due to humidity and bugs. We have probably overpacked with what we brought from Seguin but when we move onboard we will adjust down as needed. As I meal prep, I am already looking for and saving recipes that will be possible aboard Meraviglia. So the life in between is turning out to be great prep for the next step. Hoping that happens by the 21st….

I am a “spice guy” too, but there is a set of basics you can reduce to that still provides a variety of flavorful cooking. The trick is to give up the pre-compounded versions and learn to combine them yourself as needed. For example, Montreal steak seasoning – which I use all the time – can be recreated on the fly from its essential elements. With about a dozen jars of the essentials you love, you should be able to get from port to port before refilling.
