In one of the blog posts you (Bob) mentioned the backstays didn’t connect to the top of the mast, but to the top spreaders. In one of the pictures where I could see the stays it seemed so. Does that limit the maximum boom angle when sailing downwind? From the picture seems like it could limit it a lot.

We only need to use the running backstays (checkstays) when flying the staysail. We have a traditional mid-ships backstay for mast stability. So, when we are sailing downwind angles, we simply slack the leeward running backstay to allow for maximal boom angle.
